The Delaware Department of Corrections is reporting 1 in 3 inmates at Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown have tested positive for COVID-19 after all inmates were tested.
Officials say they proactively tested all 963 inmates. With 320 inmates testing positive, only 32 of them are showing symptoms.
21 SCI officers have tested positive for the disease while 18 are in self-quarantine awaiting test results.
“This infectious disease predominately hit three open dormitory-style housing units at SCI.” said DOC Commissioners Claire DeMatteis.
She continued “We are taking extraordinary measures to protect and treat our inmates and staff and reduce the risk of new infections, including unprecedented relocation of inmates to different housing units at SCI and extensive specialized decontamination cleanings to contain further spread of the virus.”
