Cambridge Girl Behind Viral Harriet Tubman Mural Pic Welcomed to State Capitol

Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones welcomed 3-year-old “Lovie” and her grandmothers Tracy and Tammy Lyndee to the State Capitol in Annapolis after a photograph of the girl went viral on social media.

The photo snapped by Lovie’s grandmothers last summer featured the 3-year-old reaching out for Harriet Tubman’s hand in a nearly completed mural in Downtown Cambridge. They posted it online and soon after it went viral around the world, being featured on television and websites. Speaker Jones invited the family before the House of Delegates floor. They were greeted by a standing ovation as a framed photo was brought before the chamber.

According to Maryland Matters, Speaker Jones presented Lovie with House Resolution #41, recognizing her “reaching your hand to touch the hand of the past as you strive to make a bright future.” Lovie’s grandmothers own and operate “Maiden Maryland,” a consignment shop on High Street near the mural.
