Delaware State Police have arrested a 23-year-old Laurel man for an early morning weekend assault.
The incident happened around 6:16 a.m. on Sunday at a residence in the 1000 block of Cherry Street in Laurel Village. Troopers say an 18-year-old female was assaulted by her boyfriend, identified as the suspect, Carlos B. Chavez-Mendez. He had assaulted her with a belt following an argument earlier that morning around 3 a.m. but then left the residence. The victim told authorities Chavez-Mendez didn’t let her leave and prohibited her from calling police. The victim eventually called 9-1-1.
Troopers later discovered Chavez-Mendez in the residence and took him into custody without incident and transported him back to Troop 5 where he was charged with Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Second Degree Assault, Aggravated Menacing, First Degree Unlawful Imprisonment, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Malicious Interference of Emergency Communications.
Chavez-Mendez was arraigned and taken to Sussex Correctional Institution on $29,000 dollars secured bond.
