New Paint Job Coming to Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse

The Delaware Breakwater East End Light House off Sussex County’s coast will soon have a fresh look.

Officials with the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs say the project will include removing old paint and rust and repainting the exterior of the structure above its concrete foundation.

The colors will replicate its existing red-brown and black.

The lighthouse’s construction was authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1825 as a safe harbor for ships seeking refuge during storms.

The project is expected to be completed before the end of the summer.

No public access will be permitted during the project. Cape Water Tours, which visit the lighthouse will not resume until the conclusion of the project.
