Kent Island, Md. (DELMARVA NEWS NOW) — As part of continuing efforts to re-deck the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Maryland Transportation Authority officials will shut down the center lane of the west bound span beginning today (Tuesday, November 5.)
The center lane of the west bound span will be closed from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on weekdays. MDTA officials say the off peak time aims to minimize traffic delays while also utilizing peak daytime temperatures that are necessary for concrete laying. Other than potential traffic backups, officials also stress that wide loads, vehicles greater than 10 feet in width, will not be allowed during the center lane closures.
At the beginning of this construction project, there were massive backups during rush hour times in the morning and afternoon forcing officials to rethink their game plan. Under Governor Hogan’s direction, MDTA officials have announced an expedition of the Bay Bridge work intended to “mitigate traffic impact on commuters, visitors, and local residents.”
